LCL vs FCL: which should you choose?
Where the cost crossover sits, and why volume is not the only thing that decides it.

Short answer: use LCL below about 14 cubic metres and FCL above it. Below the crossover you pay only for the space you use; above it, a full container is cheaper per cubic metre and gets there faster with less handling.
How each is priced
LCL is charged on revenue tonnes — whichever is greater, cubic metres or metric tonnes — plus fixed origin and destination handling. FCL is a flat rate for the box whether it is full or half empty.
The crossover
As volume rises, LCL cost rises in a straight line while FCL stays flat. They cross somewhere around 13–15 CBM on this lane, moving with market rates. Below the crossover LCL wins; above it, FCL wins and keeps winning.
Reasons to choose FCL below the crossover
- Fragile cargo — LCL is loaded and unloaded alongside other people's freight.
- High value — a sealed container has a much shorter chain of custody.
- Deadlines — FCL skips consolidation and devanning, saving several days at each end.
- Dense cargo — heavy goods hit LCL weight charging and get expensive quickly.
Reasons to stay with LCL above it
- Cash flow: smaller, more frequent shipments instead of one large one
- Storage: no need to receive and unload a whole container at once
- Testing demand before committing to volume

| Container | Capacity | Payload |

| 40ft | ~67 CBM | ~26,500 kg |
| 40ft HC | ~76 CBM | ~26,500 kg |

Questions people also ask
At what volume should I switch from LCL to FCL?
Around 14 CBM on the Dubai to UK lane, though heavy or fragile cargo can justify FCL earlier.
Is LCL less safe?
It is handled more times, which raises the chance of scuffs. Good palletising and wrapping deal with most of it, and cargo insurance covers the rest.
Can I split a container with someone else?
That is effectively what LCL is — a co-loaded container arranged and documented properly, rather than an informal share.
